Acceptance to Sage School is based on the diagnosis of a language-based learning disability, availability of space in the age-appropriate group, availability of tutors, and the overall number of students in the school. Diagnostic evaluations establish basic academic skill levels and define the nature of the child's learning disability. Sage School students typically have weaknesses in reading, writing, spelling, and expressive and/or receptive language tasks. For some, math and organizational skills are also affected. Psychological testing rules out emotional issues as the primary cause of the learning difficulties. During the complex admissions process we assess the strengths and needs of each applicant and consider how the resources of Sage School can best meet the student's educational requirements. The professional evaluations submitted with an application are the diagnostic tools we use to help determine if a child's educational needs and Sage School's programs are a good match. Considerable time is spent speaking with parents during the admissions process, as well as with the child's teacher, tutor, and the referring professional. It can be daunting to collect all the paperwork, arrange for testing, appointments, etc. during the admissions process. Now imagine there is no open spot for your student, or the decision is made that Sage School is not the appropriate placement. Sage School does not simply wish such parents luck for their future. A very concentrated effort is made to help the family find the resources they need for their child.
